Why Is Recycling Important?
Recycling is important to both the natural environment and us and it’s
one of the best ways for us to have a positive impact on the world in which
we live. The main reasons why we should recycle more are shown below:
To save energy:
By saving energy we can reduce the future effects of global warming. E.g.,
if we recycle one aluminium can, we are able to save enough energy to run
a TV for around three hours, but it depends on the energy consumption of your
TV. However, it gives you the great idea as to how much energy can be saved
during the process of recycling products.
For material conservation:
Conservation has become an increasingly important recycling issue. In the
U.S.A, around 40 million newspapers are cut down each day, which results in
the equivalent of around half a million trees ending up in landfills each
and every week.
To reduce rubbish in landfills:
When cleaning up the environment and giving land back to nature, the reduction
of landfills is important. We see much of the waste is sent to landfills in
one week - just down to one product (the everyday newspaper).
To help the environment:
We can help the environment by recycling in a number of ways. In the recycling
process, we should try to achieve a reduction of the existing landfills as
well as any future landfill developments which may be needed because of over
capacity. We can also help the environment as well as the wild life in these
areas through conservation by reducing deforestation.
An individual will try and recycle as much of their waste as possible, whether it is household waste (many areas of the UK now offer home recycling collections) or more specialist services such as metal recycling.
What you can do:
We should help to reduce the impact on landfills and here are some useful
tips you can use to recycle.
* Make use of the recycling boxes and bins and take the time to fill them.
Use them for each recyclable product (e.g. paper, plastic, and glass), and
then take these down to your local recycling centre.
* When you are shopping, look for products which does not have much packaging.
Because it is estimated that in US, around $1 of every $11 spent on food items
is the cost of the packaging. If you only purchase the items you will use,
you will reduce the estimated 21 million shopping bags of food that end up
in US landfills each and every year.
